30% and I’ve been ‘reading’ this since May 2025 🤪. It has got better but the names are wild. So French. So needlessly overwrought. Also I don’t know if I’m being unfairly critical but surely if you’re hiring specialist courtesans solely to violently disrespect them, surely you are LESS likely to mention anything important or political around them? Right?! Or am I being mean to the book again? 😅

Giving this another go. I feel like I ought to just try. Carey writes well but the three word French names, hefty lore dumps, and sex scenes using the word ‘phallus’ 😭. Honestly. It’s not at the awfulness level of ACOTAR, at least the writing here is ok and every male character isn’t ‘growling’. I *want* to like it, so we’ll see how it goes.

There’s really a character called Hareton Earnshaw. Then I realise the main character is Sarah Linton (daughter of Cathy Linton). Didn’t expect Wuthering Heights easter eggs in a Karin Slaughter book but ok lol. I kind of love it though?

This book is mental. I put off reading this because I thought it’d be a slushy romance but I’m at the halfway point and I’ll be honest I have no clue where the fuck this is going lmao.

A rare DNF (because christ I've read worse books this year alone). Unfortunately after being stuck on the M3 for my entire life yesterday with just this book for company has soured it beyond salvaging. Seemed promising but I can't face listening to this again.

What an incredible surprise. I dove into this blind and I wasn’t expecting such a complex, multi-layered, and philosophically sophisticated sci-fi. It’s taking me a while to get through because I feel like UKG says so much with every sentence and it’s also just good enough to want to savour. I’m kicking myself for not reading her sooner.

Bloody loving this. Early doors but this could be my favourite Discworld so far.

I’m not usually one for memoirs but something about the psychology of cults fascinates me. I’ve followed the Louis Theroux documentaries (and the Keith Allen one) on the WBC and it has always struck me as in equal parts repulsive and tragic. I had no idea until reading this that their beliefs were a bastardised form of Calvinism which makes sense of some of the nonsense. So far worth a read.

Narrator has really dialled down the incredible (but overly affected) Joe Pesci voice for Marino. Sad times indeed. My disappointment is immeasurable. May have to continue this as a ebook or something. It’s just not the same without my little fire cracking Italian gumshoe.

Buddy reading this with my bestie who has poked and prodded me to read Pratchett for years. Neil keeps reminding me that this first offering is the 'worst' book in the series and that the best is yet to come. Well, if that's true that can only be a 'good omen' (badum tsh).

I'm reading this as an audiobook and the narrator is great. Somehow she is able to spiritually channel Joe Pesci when she voices Marino which is both impressive and disturbing. So far highly recommend the audio editions of these if only to experience her Marino haha.

Why do I start another book when I’m in the middle of three others? Why do I reread mysteries I already know the end of? A mystery in itself.

Well I fancied crime and I remember this being somewhat decent as a teenager. A bit disturbed I was reading such in depth descriptions of semen at 14 though! Ha. So far enjoying but it’s hilarious how ‘high tech’ the 90s was. Floppy discs man!

The post apocalyptic novel of my dreams. Or nightmares. So far I can’t fault it. I’m serious. I’m 333 pages in of this 900+ page doorstop and I’m already dreading the end of it.

Imagine being able to write like this. It has a poetic richness to it (think Deathless x100) and I’m savouring each and every page. I’m doing that annoying thing where I’m stopping and saying - ‘let me read you this line quick’ which is sure not to get old ha. Have to say I’m glad I’m reading this after I put in my dissertation or I’d have burned my entire project 🤪

Re-reading these for nostalgic purposes. These books were the shit as a teenager! Ha. It definitely shows it’s age in places but it’s pure YA Eastenders with the a supernatural skew. It’s what I need after completing my final year project in a pandemic ok. My brain is mush. I am mush.
