Buddy reading this with my bestie who has poked and prodded me to read Pratchett for years. Neil keeps reminding me that this first offering is the 'worst' book in the series and that the best is yet to come. Well, if that's true that can only be a 'good omen' (badum tsh).

I don't understand the bad press this book gets from DW fans. Yes, it's different from all the others, especially in terms of structure, but that doesn't mean it's bad; just different. I've a soft spot in my heart for Rincewind - he's much easier to relate to than the Ultimately Indestructible Sam Vimes.

I agree with you! I don’t yet have a basis for comparison mind but I’m loving this so far. I will say I’m glad I started at the beginning despite outside opinion ha, I adore Rincewind and Twoflower! It has a real Python vibe to it. My mate does like these books, I think he’s probably just desperate for me to continue (but I won’t need much persuasion)!
I'm glad to hear you're enthused to continue! The first 8 or so are uniformly great; after that there is the occasional suffer, but they are few and generally far between. Highlights to watch out for along the way are Guards! Guards! and (in my opinion the shining jewel of the whole series) Small Gods. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on them all, however, as you eat them :)
