Captivating story of an horrific period of time. Grann manages to weaver a mystery in a non-fiction story with a bit of a few biographies. The story within the story of the FBI was interesting. Rarely does one enjoy an education as much as this book provides.

Absolutely phenomenal book. I didn’t think Towles could surpass A Gentleman in Moscow, but he has. Unparalleled storytelling and depth of the characters that I’d rate close to Steinbeck. Will read again in 2-3 years.

Incredibly well written novel with the depth of the of the characters evolving through the story like few other novels. I found some of the events a bit stereotypical at times , but not enough to deflect from the literature. A very strong 4, but not a 5.

Excellent introduction to the beginning of medieval literature. Lady Philosophy, Fortuna, and virtue. More than a bit of Stoicism in this important piece. A difficult read, and I recommend referencing a companion book in modern day English as you read this.

Outstanding approach to frame the Sino-American relationship. Pleasant and captivating read.
