The writing style is good but the first 200 pages are all about spousal and child abuse (physically and sexually), not really about Boston.
Yes this is how things often 'used to be' but to read about a priest, even a fictional one, saying that a woman should just suffer her husband's abuse because he's a provider and that by doing so she'll be rewarded in the next life is *so* disturbing. It's a major book turnoff.
