Tom Cowan isn’t the first by a long shot. There is a long historical record of noted scientists and scholars questioning the idea that contagion is the only answer. Invisible Rainbow was possibly the catalyst for Cowan’s deep dive into this topic. The publication date coincides closely to when I first heard him talking about it.

Thanks to Sigmund Freud we give millions of people Xanax, Prozac, and Zoloft instead of cleaning up their environment. He single handedly took the physical symptoms of electrical sensitivity, blamed them on out of control emotions, and relabeled them as anxiety attacks.

Great start - jumps right in as though the first book never ended.

I’m already on act 3 and still no Hercule Poirot.
I don’t like it when Agatha Christie does this. And she does it frequently with Miss Marple, and now she’s done it with Poirot.

Didn’t realize this is the second in a series. Oh well. I’m reading it first.

Of note: Sapir-Whorf hypothesis- the language we speak determines our worldview and even how our kinds work. This recalls 19th center idea that language expresses the spirit of a culture. Scholars still study today the ways language influences thought and experience. Other languages have more emotion words than English.

Emotional outbursts are a symptom. Permission to feel the emotion and ask the right questions to get to the root. Focus on behavior treats symptoms not the “disease”. Behavior modification distracts from the underlying causes.

Why am I surprised - but I am - that my “conventional” training (Masters in Education FSU) gave me tools to treat symptoms not root causes?

I’m halfway through but I don’t think I’m going to finish. It’s a good story but just incredibly sad and depressing which is not what I need to read right now. Maybe it would have been better 20-30 years ago, but not now. When every single character in a story is having a tragic time it’s tough.

Now for something a lot less intense 🍪

Over a hundred pages in and only about six hours have passed in the storyline. Very tense.

The whole chapter 8 - adopt a no-losers policy - is a brilliant way to make sure your relationships are full of mercy and justice. And it works for any relationship from parent child to friend to spouse to business.

I love that he give the #1 way to practice self-care as receiving God’s love. “To practice good self-care, you must learn to let the love of God and others penetrate. You must allow God’s love to sink into your soul. You must receive.”

Judgement results in defensiveness and closes down relationships, while curiosity results in openness and safety, giving life to relationships.
- that sounds like Jesus’ mode of operation when dealing with hurting people. The woman caught in adultery, the demonized, the paralyzed, all the people who came to him with messy lives received his interest rather than judgment.

uh oh….he actually uses an example where the husband had an affair and blamed it on the wife and Smalley says it was her fault….🤦🏼‍♀️

First published in 1961, this book has a bit of an Agatha Christie feel to it, but with a more subdued thoughtful quality and a good bit of philosophical musing.

He has already quoted from Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life, and has directed the reader who desires a relationship with God to go to Appendix A where we find the Sinner’s Prayer along with a list of books for further reading, except the Bible isn’t listed. 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️
