The theme so far of "Their Eyes Were Watching God", is filled with separation and isolation. Janie becomes more apart and isolated by her husband, Jody, who always abuses her by her looks that isolates her from him.

Janie is a 24 year old woman who has been abused by her husband and is clumsy.

Loneliness symbolizes isolation from the outside world and fear of the unknown that causes internal suffering. In this case the main character constantly faces loneliness from her husband who is a mayor in a poor town.
