In the first few pages the author introduces the characters of the book: Darry, Sodapop, Johnny, and Ponyboy. One night, Ponyboy is walking home from the movie theater and sees a red Corvair following him. He realizes that in it, are a few Socs and he starts to run. Soon enough, they catch him and start to beat him up. When the Socs where finished with him his friends came to save him.
