On the value of literature and music as sites for engagement with emotion: "the 'potential space' of aesthetic activity is a space with which we investigate and try out some of life's possibilities" (243) and "feel a range of emotions" (242) allowing us to see a range of human motivations and the objects they focus upon.

On the arts as important supports for civilization-preserving emotions like compassion: they "encourage pleasure of the most difficult type: the pleasure of contemplating our mortality and our vulnerability to the worst disasters in life" (352) and in that recognition we see that if it is possible for me, it is possible for others.
