“This you have to understand. There's only one way to hurt a man who's lost everything. Give him back something broken.”
What a great beginning. Donaldson has grown to be a very favourite author. His characterization, dialogues and powerful prose are so compelling. He is the closest to Bakker I can think of in these aslects

I loved these books growing up (yes I am aware they aren't kids books), and I plan to reread. I also have The Gap Cycle too, which I'm looking forward too

I mean I have read and loved most of Berserk...I can handle the worst stuff if the story and characters are fleshed out enough to reward the effort it takes to digest the darkness

I own the first Bakker! After a difficult time with Malazan, I sorta took it off my TBR.Odd, I really love a lot about the three Malazan books I read but...they wore me down

I do not know why people often associate those two. they are not very related. Very different kind of storytelling. Bakker is much more focused and intimate. Tight cast with relationship dynamics that remind a lot of the Berserk.
I am not a fan of Malazan though I have read five books. I do not plan to read more. Tired of the many characters and plots. I found many of them very uninteresting. I also did not like how convenient is everything. Anything can happen. People die and resurrect. People are gods. Demigods. Immortals. Places, items etc the same. Everything is possible thats why nothing happening had any impact on me
I think you hit the nail on the head for me! I hadn't thought of those points like that but looking back, it was frustrating.

First time I quit at book five and another two tries I quit at book three.
Okay well if Bakker isn't comparable in this manner then fantastic, I shall get to it hopefully this year!
