Thoughts on 2nd story:
Junko believes the man in «To build a fire» lokgs for death because thats what she does. She derives the opposite from her bonfire to the man in the story: to her the fire allows her to welcome death.

In my opinion, the last story rounded off the book with a predictable ode to the niceguy. The woman of the story had no agency whatsoever and just went with a guy she was less interested in because he was the one who took action. Yeah ok.

Thoughts on the first story:
My theory is that what happened with his wife mirrors the deaths of those in the earthquake: she died on the first day. she was still, unmoving, as if caught in the rubble. and after a week she leaves, and is unreachable, as if buried in the ground.
it could also be more literal: she reacts strongly to this event and her husband doesnt notice one bit, or try to help her. she leaves.
