I just started a new book and ran into one of my pet peeves. The author introduced 12 characters within the span of 17 pages, and used more than one name for 3 of them. I read those pages over several times and made some notes to keep the characters straight. Surely there's a better way to set the stage for a story.

Oh, wow! That's a little much! And the same name 3 times?!?!

No, I mean a particular person had the first name and the Mrs. married name. So you had to connect them. The author did this with three different people in the first few pages. To me, that is confusing.
Oh, that might be even harder if they weren't introduced by the full name to start with!
