By the time the first set ended, however, her vexation with him had faded, for she’d secured partners for three more dances. Goodness, it doesn't take much to cheer her up, does it?

If she hadn’t been grappling with the loss of the baby, she might not have been so quick to give in to her own misgivings. Or perhaps if Alex had not been increasingly distant as the night wore on, so quiet and withdrawn, her anxiety might not have got the better of her. Or perhaps if they talked to each other she would have no misgivings to give in to!!

See now, if he'd only told her the truth about his feelings for her she wouldn't be worrying about his motives in wanting to return to London. Just because he was hoping to marry the girl doesn’t mean he still has feelings for her.”

you’ll give her the time she needs to recover before you make any further demands on her health. Oh crap, now she'll probably think that his inattention towards her means that he's angry with her or finds her disgusting because of her miscarriage. More drama caused by miscommunication, just what this book needs.

And to make it worse, she had the terrible suspicion the next time she crossed paths with George, she would be just as weak and every bit as foolish as she’d been that afternoon. God, what an idiot! I was sort of softening towards her, but now this. She really is an unsympathetic character.

Roxana frowned. Why should Miss Hammond’s whereabouts remain so shrouded in mystery? Ohhh! I've just cottoned on to who got Miss Hammond pregnant. Why did that take me so long to work out? It should have been obvious from the start.

Even so, she wondered how different life might be if she were the London girl Ayersley had hoped to court. I love her, he’d said when she’d asked him about the girl as they’d waltzed on the night George had jilted her. I’ve never loved anyone else. And if he would just tell her who he was talking about most of their problems would be resolved.

The intimacy, the closeness—that sense of a real connection with him—had been nothing but a product of her imagination. God! All this miscommunication is making me want to hit something (or someone).
