On the trail hearing and sharing stories from the same world I lived in didn’t feel like enough. Understanding people from different backgrounds, who have different perspectives and ways of thinking can be a real pain in the ass. It’s so much easier to pass judgement, stop listening. I really liked being judgemental. It was so much more efficient than being open.

I always thought my part on the trail the most important. I got a campfire started in a rainstorm. If we were five days out in the middle of nowhere, wet, cold, short of food. It was my temperament and experience that convinced us that the challenge ahead was something we could do. But it is not enough to wrestle a challenge into one you can do. Somehow you need to be convinced that it’s one you should do.
