I’m really ready for this book to be over. If Scott Hahn is the guy most likely to convince me of Catholicism, this book is the antidote that would cause me to reject it anew.

The chapter on marriage and the chapter on anointing the sick were really insightful. But I’d be lying if I said that this book felt like it had a purpose. Whose questions is Richter answering? He would have done better to just lay out a guide to the Catholic ideas of sacraments and sacramental symbology.

I can’t help but feel like Richter makes too much of semantics, but I also think he’s doing the right thing by straddling between the liberals and conservatives in seeking liturgical reform without sacrificing the meaning of the sacraments themselves. Unfortunately, I think it works against him to be Catholic and, despite his attempt to marry the subjective experience to the objective I don’t think he succeeds
