The idea for this book was suggested by my friend and mentor, the author and expert Ahmed Rashid, during a trip to Balochistan and southern Afghanistan in October 2003. We had witnessed much suffering and privation, and he urged me to write something for a global audience explaining the Pashtun enigma.
