Jan 17th: Revolutionary axiomatic: defining public law and the rights of humans from the ground up.

Empirical and utilitarian approach which defines the sphere of independence of the governed on the basis of the necessary limitation of government

So he’s arguing that the radical approach which tries to define the juridical limitation of public authorities through the government’s utility has been more lasting.

It’s clear Foucault is trying to explain the motivation behind imperialism, and how it’s linked to liberal politics. However, he’s basically just explaining a phenomenon that we know to be true today. I wonder if that was the case when he gave a lecture, or if, maybe it was something seen as revolutionary? It’s interesting that he says that Napoleon had an administrative monarchy, and was anti-police state.

So it seems to me that within his first lecture of the series, Michel Foucault has established the birth of liberalism, and the transition between sovereignty and capital based free-market governance style. I’m interested to see where this goes. For anyone interested in starting this book just note the first 10 pages are the hardest to get through so far. I’m on page 25 ha ha.

“Let's suppose that universals do not exist. And then I put the question to history and historians: How can you write history if you do not accept a priori the existence of things like the state, society, the sovereign, and subjects?”

I think the word priori is essential to this idea. Histology continuously finds that priories allow for ‘silences’ as Michel-Rolph Trouillot would say in histories.
