Ahhh yes when Elvis begins to defend himself and explain how he's NOT ACTUALLY MISOGYNISTIC GUYS it's funny but it also reveals what I love about Costello. Even through all of the anger and all of the cutting disillusionment, there is a real undercurrent of tenderness and a sympathy for women. Despite his own failings and his hypocrisy there is an undeniable understanding of others' humanity that I find so touching.

It gets easier to follow as you grow accustomed to Costello's scattered account of random events, but I'm starting to understand why he writes this way. He's a poet, and his lines come from various random things that he notices and experiences. They all become condensed into something regardless of original context. It's a haphazard collage of experiences and words and memories, just as his poetry can be.
