Why am I so invested in this bird’s story? God I want her chick to survive. And I want her to eat well! Why does it pain me when she goes flying to barely get enough food? WHAT HAVE WE HUMANS DONE TO THE ENVIRONMENT!!! We fucking suck. We’ve killed so many goddam birds. Like they were shooting albatross that followed the boats just for FUCKING FUN??? God we suck.

Carl seems like he’s living the dream. Just out scuba diving in the pacific and seeing incredible wildlife. But the part about watching an albatross try to feed its chick and a toothbrush getting caught in its throat and the bird not being able to finish feeding its chick was devastating. We really are destroying this earth for everything else

These 90 minute chapters really are hard for me. I’m a “get through it in one go” type of guy, but as slow reader, it’s hard to find 90 minutes to sit down and be engaged back at home. But it was a good chapter. Kinda cool to read about the fishing practices on an Alaskan boat, and goddamn does it seem hard. I’m missing Amelia (bird) but I think next chapter will talk about her. Hopefully she finds food!

Boy that was a long chapter. The 90 minute chapters make it really hard for me to get into reading. But hearing about the overfishing and killing of sea birds is pretty interesting. Although I want more about Amelia. How is she doing? Is her chick still doing well? I NEED TO KNOW! But I’m looking forward to Carl’s fishing journey to learn more about commercial fishing. Really interesting to hear a sustainable way

What a chapter. He’s now at Laysan island, which sounds amazing. But god is it so devastating to hear the things humans have done to the animals of these islands. As I’m driving back from the beach, going 80 kmh, I put my hand out the window and pretend my arm is an albatross wing (a little shorter). Just feeling the wind give some lift to my arm makes me feel like a bird. This book just makes me love nature.

The whole magnetic thing and how birds might see magnetic fields is nuts. I’m so curious as to how they actually navigate with magnetism and sense and perceive it. Are there different structures in their brain? They have magnetite in their bones, but apparently that’s more for iron management? Since when are birds so cool???

Well the chapter about seals was interesting. The work those researchers do is hardcore. But they so clearly love it, it’s amazing. I love seeing passion like that. When people truly love what they do and the work they do makes them feel apart of something bigger. #goals
