Possibly Stackpole's tightest writing to date. Sincerely wish Stackpole could write a female character with some intrinsic motivation. This has a cool magic system, coupled with a Weber-like commentary on history but suffers from an unbalanced cast.

Dare I say, there are actually decent female characters here? Still a little too motivated by the male characters' plot needs, but definitely improving!
