I had to laugh when I read the "mission statement" of Alcoholics Anonymous as told by one of the persons in the story:
"We will accept the Devil himself
...if he is an alcoholic and needs our help."

Gosh, Joseph Kessel is such a good writer.
I urge you to try his books that are available in English.
