pure heroines: i am 100% behind her thesis, but the impression i got is tolentino has the references to pass as literary savvy but lacks the knowledge to actually back and support them.
she just picked very unfortunate examples that i know way too well (hunger games, twilight, anna karenina, for starters), and oversimplified them to a point where i had to disagree with a point i originally subscribed to. 7/10

pure heroines: not my favorite, i agree with her final conclusion and overall argument about the limitations of the female main character or literary heroine versus male hero, but her arguments fall short to me. mainly, i see an issue wjth the examples she chooses to justify her arguments and i think she occurs in the error of oversimplifying complicated novels to sustain her own arguments. 3/5 section, good points.

third essay done (always be optimizing). at an utter loss of words; this put in words so much of what i have been feeling over the past 6 or so years.
from depicting the lululemon-wearing instagram-optimal ideal woman a a "self-generating spectacle with a viewership attached" to her complete understanding of the impossibility of the problem of optimization, a simply beautiful and so well written and researched essay.

just finished the first essay, "the i in the internet." it was hauntingly accurate in its representation of what ended up being still the current state of the social internet. absolutely disturbing, incredibly depressing, but undeniably true.
final thought: her final prediction on the end of the worst part of the internet being social and economic collapse alongside monetization censorship is exactly tiktok's issue.
