Although Stevenson's first novel does not achieve the refined storytelling excellence of 'Kidnapped', it contains many of the same themes including a young man's coming of age, trust and betrayal, seafaring adventure and religious conversion. In Long John Silver, 'Treasure Island' also boasts one of its author's most memorable creations and a subtle well of inspiration.
