At this point we've already had several (at least 3) indications that things are not what they seem and that the narrator is just as in the dark as her ex-pat is.
From the mysterious and unexplained projection technology to the boss who's face mysteriously changes appearance in subtle ways to the reports unceremoniously tossed in the bin.
