yalom’s views on the here & now are very interesting & i would only subscribe to about 45% of this in my practice. i think authenticity, immediacy, and the present are all important components for the work, yalom describes it in a way that could negatively impact the dynamic i will have with my clients (especially as a woman therapist working with teenagers). it definitely has something to it but i have qualms.

i have more respect for how yalom explains self disclosure in these chapters. i the benefit in neglecting freuds ideas of the therapist being a “blank screen” in the name of transference. that is not what a client needs or wants. granted, self disclosure should be a therapeutic tool that has a therapeutic outcome. it should benefit the client not the therapist. i think those lines blur for yalom sometimes.

period. i love the chapter about getting your own therapy as a therapist. it’s so important for accepting feedback, being challenged, being made aware of our blind spots and biases and neurosis that can get in the way of being available for our clients. it’s makes us authentic. it makes us insightful. i also like how yalom included the importance of diversifying the therapeutic modality of personal therapy.

some of his takes are definitely unique but i really like how he highlights the importance of authenticity and empathy and bringing yourself into the therapeutic relationship. i just think he likes doing it for himself and not the clients sake which is not the vibe and i think he take self disclosure too far but otherwise kinda period so far
