"the actual scent he intended to produce: that was the scent of humanness." I'm finally starting to get it. He kills people because he's jealous of their humanity or their human scent since he doesn't have one of his own. Him being described as a weird, almost supernatural being is just a representation of his inability to feel human. He's so isolated from others he wants to trick others into believing his humanity.
