Because while we can choose isolation, abandonment pulls the rug out from under us leaving us lying on ground muddied by our own lack. Abandonment sees "you were right. You ARE NOT ENOUGH" the pain and fear of having a loved one leave are real they are felt, and they can shadow the waters of belonging.

Love opens us up to the possibility of being hurt

Yes. That's the fear there's never a guarantee that anyone stays.

We chose the shallows because life at the surface provides a perceived safety and minimal commitment. We can smile broadly on Sunday mornings casting our hello how are you's wide without offering more than a "good/fine/busy" in return.

Most days it seems easier to slide above the surface or shine a momentary spotlight on our best features rather than sit with another person in confession. To not only look upon the reality of our souls but for another set of eyes to bear witness
