“That’s… not… how it happened,” Shannon said, frowning.
“Do you think they’ll say they went against their own long-standing policies and accept the blame for their misdeeds? Or do you think they’ll place the blame on us and continue on their merry way?” I asked, staring at her. “Use your reason, and tell me what you think is more likely.”

“So you’re good looking, have an exciting job, are disease-free, and sterile,” Shannon said, making a joke out of it. “Hmm, that may explain your luck in certain departments.”
“Charm has a bit to do with that.”
“Not from where I’m standing,” Shannon said. “Don’t take this the wrong way but from our short association, you’re kind of an asshole.”

LOL. Poor Derek.

“The Emerald Eye has placed a half-million dollar bounty on your head.”
I snorted. “I’m insulted. James Bond got a million in The Man with the Golden Gun, and that was the seventies.”
In truth, I was horrified. Despite how people react in movies, a price on your head was nothing to laugh about. Most agents, when they had a hit put on them, went underground.
Nothing like a bit of bluster to impress a lady.

“Someone has been feeding the Emerald Eye information about our operations and giving them devices created by our scientists.”
I blinked, letting my mouth hang open. “You didn’t think to mention it to me? I’m a senior agent for fuck’s sake.”
“Well,” the Professor said, crossing his arms and leaning back, “until tonight, our primary suspect was you.”

Falling to one knee, I looked over to see if Penny was all right. Even if it wasn’t proper protocol, she was my sister. If it was a choice between her and the mission, screw the mission. It was one of the reasons I was a terrible spy.

Better to be likeable than good I say:)

“Pass me your compact,” I said, stretching out my hand.
“What makes you think I have a compact?”
“Because you’re a woman.”
“Seriously?”
“Please?” I said, wiggling my fingers.
“You’re lucky I decided to look my best today,” Penny said, slipping over the makeup case.

Our lead in this one is already reminding me of Gary from Phipps supervillain series. Which is a good thing:)

Penny stared. “That’s crazy.”
“Well, yes, obviously. No one ever said the world’s supernaturals were rational,” I said, snorting. I’d met some genuinely nutty people over the years like the one wizard who thought he could rule the world with a book of beginner spells he’d found in his attic.

Pity we did not get to hear more about that guy!

“The debonair spy and his beautiful companion sat at a restaurant table underneath a set of palm trees,” I said, leaning back into my chair, staring out into the crowd. “They were on high alert because anything could happen in their world of espionage, magic, and mystery.”
“Derek, we’re at a mall food court,” my sister, Penny, said. “These palm trees are plastic.”

LOL. It has been a fun start.
