Some of my favorites so far:

Lansing Lugnuts - named after, well, a lugnut as an homage to the city's automotive history as the home of Oldsmobile for over 100 years until '04. The problem is that the mascot in the logo is a bolt...

Lowell Spinners - named after the city's important history as a textile manufacturing hub in the 1800s. The mascot is the "Canaligator," an alligator named for the city's canals.

In the '90s, the owner of a new Akron team wanted to name the team the "Akron Blast" in honor of Ohio's role in the space program, making specific reference to Ohioans like the Wright brothers, Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, and Judith Resnick. They had a mascot named "Kaboom."

There was a problem, though: Judith Resnick died as a result of the 1986 Challenger explosion...

They went with the "Akron Aeros" instead.
