interesting; rough start. prose is lovely, speech sounds a bit unnatural. a bit heavy handed with the establishing of character personalities.
why does he default to calling her mom if he never felt wanted and she doesn't like it? why is he unwanted if his mother thinks he was an answer to her prayer for a child?
