I’m racing through it, love how he sets up Alec as the second love from the start - Maurice’s infatuation with the young garden boy as a child, his desire as an adolescent and adult to disappear into the ‘greenwood’, the obscured face of the ‘friend’ in his dreams, his childhood fear of the dark and Alec emerging from it. It’s not perfect, but feel I’ve been misled by ppl saying it’s badly plotted

I don’t see how this is described as unfinished/ badly-plotted, or how Forster himself could have wished M and C ended together. C is more sympathetic than Grant, his self-hating delusion after Greece is so complete it convinces us. The way he becomes another ‘leader’ of M, teacher-like, even as M convinces himself they are equals, is imp. M and C are touching, but Forster isn’t writing them as soulmates.
