Especially at the beginning, this has the over-excited prose and larger-than-life characters of a pulp adventure, rather than the more staid presentation of the usual classic mystery. The editing leaves something to be desired, especially the comma splices and comma placement in general. But, by keeping the main character's purpose mysterious, it does compel reading. (I'm sure I've guessed who he is, though.)

Yeah, the main character is way out of his depth when it comes to plotting and subterfuge, and it's pretty obvious now who the shadowy villain is. To me, but not to the MC.
