He also thinks that society depends on mutual respect, but that respect has to be earned.
This book is trying to not argue for letting people die in the gutter, but it's like, "But also we shouldn't help people unless they earn it."
Maybe as part of living in a society we shouldn't let people drown, as a rule. Because that's part of being civilized. Maybe people shouldn't need to earn dignity.

Complaining about DEI before it was cool. XD
Apparently you can't hold people to standards AND be compassionate at the same time. Granted, there are people who seem to believe compassion means endlessly tolerating bad behavior. But you don't have to listen to them! You don't have to compensate for bad takes with worse takes!

This book is giving me the rage. Like brother, friend, people wont participate in society MORE if you take their entitlements away. They will be trapped inside, unable to go anywhere or do anything. Participation in society costs MONEY. If you give people with a deficit of money some money, they will go outside and do things. Now they can buy a bus ticket or go to the store.
