"Buckingham, qu'elle hait, comme elle hait tout ce qu'elle a aimé" - which suggests that apparently Buckingham the great seducer really did have an affair with Milady in which she was foolish enough to allow her heart to become engaged (as opposed to her seducing him for her own purposes!) I had assumed Milady as cast-off lover was a political fiction for Richelieu's benefit...

Another odd abridgement in the Russian version: Athos' line "I thought so, and that was why I intervened" is missing in response to Aramis' admission that he had intended to kill Richelieu if the Cardinal had insisted on demanding the letter from Marie Michon.... The text cuts straight to Aramis taking the letter out of his pocket again and reading it out loud to the others.

I checked the end of this chapter back against the English translation, and the tone of Athos' parting remark appears to have been entirely altered for no apparent reason: 《Vous êtes-vous bien amusés dans votre excursion?》
--Prodigieusement, répondit Athos, les dents serrées.
"Have you found yourselves amused in your excursion?"
"Prodigiously so!" replied Athos in his own name, and that of his companions.

I'd have thought that sending a letter to Lord Winter in London in time of war risked being regarded as equally treasonable as sending one to warn Buckingham directly ... but I suppose at least Winter is not in command of the enemy army!

The famous bastion of La Rochelle ... (and is Athos planning a 'Beau Geste' tactic? I don't remember that...)
