This book is harrowing in a way that Covenant of Water was not. CoW I would describe as 'heartbreaking' at certain points, but this book is definitely more 'harrowing.'
Scenes of political violence and descriptions of violence against women have left me breathless. The reality of Ethiopia and the unrest during the rule of Emperor Selassie's rule underlies the boys' childhood as they come of age at Missing

Verghese draws on his own heritage in this book with a Malayali nun who find herself in Ethiopia where she fathers 2 sons, one of whom is the narrator thus far. So far he’s given us his mother’s history and I’m excited to see how her life parallels or contrasts his!!
Obviously I knew I’d be so hooked on this, since I LOVED Covenant of Water. I was right 😭
