The writing is compelling, for the most part, and informative as it deals in significant detail with the history of many of the places visited.

However Wheatley was a British exceptionalist, a champion of the wealthy and privileged, an apparently proud racist, and misogynistic into the bargain. As such, I have regularly had to put down the Kindle and return to it later, which obviously marred my experience.
