Athens is a fun sneaky villain. I love how bitchy this thing gets. Hard to do this, only this, this hard manual work, in this tight knit community, for so much of your life, without the whole thing bubbling over with steaming personalities.

The way the sailors talk about the history of sailing in these waters, the generations of it all, the “good old days” of it all, just makes the Caribbean feel like a much more fully realized, ancient little region than I’m used to thinking of it. Lots of important perspective comes with reading a book like this, I feel. That’s what you get from a non-fiction fiction writer I guess.
