Placing brothers in competition for what was already theirs. But they were not owners, like the Europeans. They were dwellers, celebrators, conservators. They respected. Not power over, but power with. They knew the land and the land knew them.

The European divide and conquer. An evil they could not perceive in their own lack of self-understanding. Inability to see within. The within that only the natives knew.

This is a history book. It is personal for me. The history of my grandmother's people. A piece of my history.

Still on page 4. I have read very few histories in all my reading. A good history is a far cry from the history books of my high-school years, when I was more accepting of superficiality. This book was written, partly, because the future of a people depend on it.

This is an important book to me, and I am reading carefully. The intro is thick with new terminology and ideas. A lot to think about. There is history we were not taught in school, i.e., that a long-standing confederacy of tribes existed on this continent when the EuroAmericans showed up to claim land.
