I've thus far jumped around read Chapters 1, 2, 8, 9, 3, and 4, (that is, all of parts 1 and 3). Admittedly slow progress, for me, which is telling. I have three observations. (1) Ch. 3 & 4, about the Community B question and the role of women in a mining community were cursory, but fascinating, (2) Ch. 8 & 9 were equally cursory and interesting, but, unfortunately, Singer isn't the storyteller that I recall Beik was

in her excellent work of a similar subject matter, and, (3) with regard to chapters 1 and 2, it seems that Singer writes more deeply and passionately on the inner machinations of the pre-Depression UMWA International leadership, and the ideological tensions with the radicals at the District and Local levels. Rightly so, I think, because that stuff is rather fascinating, and must have been fun to research; that section was, however, a bit dense from a self-confessed layman to Labor History such as myself. I have to say, though, it is a very interesting book so far, just slow going on my part. I look forward to reading the "earthier" subjects like Part 2 and the subsequent chapters.
