The Great Rising began with violence in opposition to tax collectors looking to steal wealth from workers to bolster the military exploits of the nobility. Soon it blossomed into widespread rebellion. Countless numbers of peasants and merchants lashed out against the bureaucratic machinery, destroying stores of records detailing debts and obligations, freeing prisoners, organizing strikes, and murdering officials.
