This book explains the science of cosmetics and debunks marketing claims in an accessible and funny way. "Can you really rebuild your hair?" is hilarious. They compare using a hair restructuring treatment with amino acids to re-form hair to "trying to repair a weather-worn Kate Spade bag by pouring a basket of thread and fabric on it." Lolz!

Well written, informative, funny. Like most scientists, the "Beauty Brains" consider themselves "objective" and impartial, but since it's clear that many of them are employed by the beauty industry-- I take their reassurances that most conventional products are safe and herbal products are dangerous with a large grain of salt. That said, I'm glad I read the book and am interested in checking out their blog.

Just learned that saliva can help wounds and acne! Just make sure to use your own, according to the authors.

I'm enjoying indulging my fascination w cosmetic science. While I understand that the authors are experts in conventional cosmetics, I wish they'd highlight more natural ingredients. They list the top 5 moisturizing oils and only #5 is natural (coconut oil), but they don't give other examples. I want to know what the other natural oils and moisturizers are!
