Gonna set this book aside for awhile so my brain cells can regroup, and I can listen to Mark Sandman sing his song titled Patience.

Oh no! Well, I did say he was very literary. It's not genre work. Does the portrayal of Smilla at least seem accurate to you...as a man writing a woman?
Berengaria, the Smilla character does answer the question I raised; that is, a guy can successfully write a credible/believable female character. I'm grateful to you for suggesting this novel. I've just been reading so much depressing nonfiction lately that my brain is weary. It just needed a short break. I'm sure I'll have a more coherent/complete perspective when I finish the novel.
