Many Westerners writing about Japan write like they're trying to make you feel like they're cool badasses. Jake Adelstein does it, and so does Greenfeld. Both also seem to have a slightly tenuous distinction between "I saw it" fact and "I'm imagining it" fiction. I wish this had some journalistic (or academic, whichever) rigour, because I KNOW Tatsu and his gf didn't fuck while he took notes... So what's the truth?
