“The song I can sing is as shreds one remembers
Of golden imaginings fashioned in sleep,
A whispered tale told by the withering embers
Of old things far off that but few hearts keep.”

The Pool of Forgetfulness is a good autumnal poem. I also liked better the version of Tinfang Warble that returns in the poem Over Old Hills and Far Away.

In honor of that ubiquitous purple typewriter ribbon:

The purple ribbon of Leeds,
The clue the researcher needs,
To date Tolkien’s verse,
Riddled with faint writing or worse,
Thus the ordering of poems succeeds.

Random Thought: someone ought to write a poem entitled, “The Purple Ribbon of Leeds.”

Sem You'll be at this all year.

Leaflet The page numbers are all wrong. I have a total of 1501 pp.

Sem I'd change it but 1620 is the 'official' number and someone would change it back again. The pagination for the various editions is confusing. GR has four editions - two ebooks, two hardcovers. A US edition of each and a UK edition of each. All are different, none are 1501. I can't imagine why the UK Kindle edition would have about 1000 pages more than the US Kindle edition. There's clearly a problem with the edition info almost everywhere. However, I found a seller listing that said 1501 pages for the US edition.
