Johnson’s insistence on a two-dimensional covenant with Abraham lowers his work in my opinion. I get what he’s saying. But also, the existence of a covenant of works doesn’t deny the existence of mercy. There are two covenants— one with each Adam— and a promise to Abraham. To say that the covenant with Abraham that differed from Adam is very Presbyterian.

There are two parts to this book and I only have part 1. Given how he argues in this book, I’m probably okay with that. I think Johnson makes the covenantal taxonomy too complicated by not distinguishing between ‘promise’ and ‘covenant.’ Was the New Covenant established with Abraham? No, but it was promised to him. Making that distinction clarifies so much of this book.
