The incessant referencing is superfluous, annoying and messes with the narrative flow. Marisha, gurl..you doin' too much. Its a good story. Let it play out, stop adding paint to the canvas, it just makes the painting look muddy.

I can't decide if it's intelligent or pretentious. The reviews compare it to The Secret History. I found that book to be boring AF. This one reminds me more of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events with the BOTTOMLESS amount of metaphors and similies. For me, I am enjoying all the references but all the fancy writing is getting in the way of my connecting with the protagonist. Alas, I will push on.
