I just love when Steinbeck zooms out of a narrative and somehow sets a stage. Whether that’s the eviction of the tenant farmers in ch. 5 or the characterization of the used car dealers in ch. 7, or even the turtle crossing the road in ch. 3 when he rips you out of the developing story, he does so in a way that enthralls you in the prose.
