If ur just like sitting or standing there with other people and no one is talking and it’s awkward then I usually just say like “soooooooo, (name) what’s your favorite color” and it’s kinda weird at first, but then they answer and someone else says something and it gets going…. But then again I am an extrovert and socially comfortable, so not sure if this would work for you 🤷♀️
Ask their favorite color even if you already know it, it makes it even more funny and weird😉😜 and I like to be weird

Smile and say hi. And people are nicer than you think. Complement them honestly. Even if u meet one person who’s rude dust off ur shoulders and try again! There are really kind people out there 😊

Honestly, just starting with a "how are you?" or something related to what you're doing, like "Oh, do you know how to solve this math problem?" could work. Or finding common interests, like if they're carrying around a book you like, have a sticker, shirt, keychain, etc. of something you like as well, that can also work.
