I’m in the portion of the book about Curtis Sittenfeld and Kaplow seems to be just completely shitting on her, calling her a fat virgin and saying her books are ordinary and her characters unlikable. Is this somehow supposed to be satire? If it is, I don’t get it. I’d like to read an interview with him where he explains what exactly he was going for, but so far I haven’t been able to find one.

So close to finished… but not quite there yet. It’s not a Galt’s Gulch thing—they’re just being kidnapped. Why the “bad guy” would kidnap them and fake their deaths rather than just kill them outright is a mystery to me. I guess murder is a big step to take.

It’s starting to look like the writers maybe weren’t killed but did a Galt’s Gulch sorta thing? Also, probably Kaplow is doing “satire” again but his version of Tom Clancy is the most obnoxious right-wing blowhard imaginable. Is there any kernel of truth to this? If they have Galt’s Gulched themselves, why was Clancy invited? I can’t believe I still have AN HOUR left in the audiobook. Ready to be done.

One thing about this audiobook which is unusual: you can hear narrator Arte Johnson turning the pages on the physical copy of the book he’s reading from. This is not something I’ve experienced with other audiobooks. It seems… amateurish?

I finally got to the part where Curtis Sittenfeld shows up, which is what I’ve been waiting for. The author is describing her in negative terms, though. One of the first words he used to describe her is “lumpy”. 🫤

This book has come up a few times for me because one of the writers killed in it is Curtis Sittenfeld, my favorite author. I don’t think this book is going to be very good, actually, but I saw the audiobook is just 6 hours so it seemed like a fine pick. I’m really going into it with low expectations. So far I really dislike the voice of the narrator, the late Arte Johnson. Apparently he was somewhat famous.
