This story reminds me of Elizabeth Jolley's short story The Last Crop - which I read in an anthology, however it was published in a collection of Jolley's short stories - Woman in a Lampshade, 1983. This short novel has an earlier publicat. date - '81 - so clearly an idea that Jolley wanted to rework. I'm only half through so I don't know how the novel pans out - but the same idea of redemption in owning land.
