My stress is officially higher than it’s ever been. My boots stomp across the floor as Nadia checks Ember out. At least she’s back in human form after the trip to the cave nest. It boggles my mind that she can still shift when she’s so full of babies, but I also know her wolf would never put them in danger.

Ember takes her sweet time going into heat. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but she’s already learned we weren’t joking about not letting her out of the house…
Which leads to a very awkward—or if you’re me, amusing—question-and-answer session where she interrogates her possible future enforcers by standing in the front door. They form a line, passing the porch one by one.

My lion guides us through the trees at a rapid pace with utter conviction that he won’t face-plant into an unexpected tree trunk. He comes to the edge of the woods right as Ember tackles the smaller of two wolves. She viciously tears into his side as her paws rake over the wolf’s face and flank.
The larger wolf stalks closer to Ember from behind.

Scooting up just a little, I let my wet core drag over his knot and shaft as I move to kiss him. He has to bend to reach me, due to the height difference, but we make it happen.
He slides his hand over my neck and up into the hair at the base of my skull. I’d give anything to feel him give it a little tug, but he holds me in place with a firm and commanding grip.

Lorcan takes a seat next to me on the couch, grabbing my wrist and placing it in his lap. He runs his fingers over the spot where he placed that mark. “I’m going to use a little magic to see if we can spruce this place up a bit.”
I check to see how Anders feels about that. This is his home, after all.
He shrugs. “I only took this place because it was empty.

I nod, and my cheeks feel hot. My sister has always been weirdly in tune with picking up on my moods. I’m sure she can tell I’ve got proverbial heart eyes for the new alpha.
“Okay, good talk.” Ember smiles tightly. “If you don’t feel comfortable coming to me directly, maybe you could mention any problems or ideas to Sofia or Anders?”

If I was more coherent, I would feel really strange about sticking my nose in Anders’s armpit. As it stands, I’m just grateful his scent is settling my tender stomach.
I pass out again and wake before the sun has even fully risen. It’s that dusky time when everything is hazy, and no one wants to be awake just yet. My job requires a lot of late nights and going to bed in the early morning hours.

The low growling that comes from the bedroom has me flipping off the water and tugging the door open.
My eyes widen as I hiss, “Oh, shit.”
The lion, who has to be Anders, stands on the bed, staring at the open doorway.
My eyes follow his line of sight, and…
Oh yeah, Veryn looks super pissed.
Glancing down at the T-shirt and basketball shorts I’m wearing that aren’t mine…

Kent knew he was supposed to stay away. He just lost one of his dads. I couldn’t imagine him having to watch me die too.
It’s mind-boggling how he ended up with Ember in the first place. I’m pretty sure my seven-year-old nephew begged her to intercede on my behalf…
Goddamn.
That’s embarrassing.
My animal forms rarely agree on anything, but they don’t like it, either.

Bet the wolf she saved is her mate and she’s gonna turn him into an alpha and help raise his little brother.

A smile crosses my face, despite the agony. He’s a cute kid with just the right kind of spunk.
“You stood there for twenty minutes, snarling at anyone who tried to get close enough to check on you. Good job!

average human Being in wolf form probably makes her feel safer, like she’s capable of defending against anyone who might mean them harm.
Shaking out my hands, I pace back in the opposite direction.
Lorcan steps into my path, quirking an eyebrow. “Calm yourself. Your anxiety is filtering straight through the bond and into our mate.”
Fuck.
I’m about to lose my shit. My dragon struggles against me, mentally fighting for control, and my hands shift into my claws.
“I’m trying,” I say, shaking my head.
And I really fucking am. My dragon is freaking the fuck out, and no matter how I try to force him to relax, it’s just not happening.
Over the last two weeks, Nadia has seen Ember and the babies three times. Four, including today. And she mentioned last time that Ember is measuring way further along than she actually is.
This is all my fault. Wolves aren’t meant to carry a dragon egg and multiple other babies. This is a disaster in the makings.
I could have waited.
I should have waited.
And if I had, we wouldn’t be here right now.
Nadia leaves Ember, Anders, and Ember’s mom in the nest to come over to speak to me and Lorcan. She gives a tight smile that betrays her nerves, and it only ratchets my panic even higher.
“First things first,” she says softly. “You’re going to have to calm down, or I’m going to have to remove you.”
My eyes glow, and Lorcan takes a step toward me, like he’s about to zap my ass with magic if necessary.
“I’m perfectly relaxed,” I growl. It’s a terrible lie. Not even remotely believable, but I would do anything to be able to swap places with Ember right now.
“Okay,” Nadia says. “I’ve never actually run into a situation where this has happened, but I believe Ember is going to birth your egg first…” She plants her hands on her hips. “Like today. Maybe tomorrow, but either way, it will be soon.”
My heart stalls.
“What does that mean for the other babies?” I finally manage to choke out.
“I’m hopeful that we will only be delivering the egg today. Dragon’s eggs are generally born about this time, anyway. If all goes to plan, your baby will continue to incubate in the egg, and the rest will gestate where they’re supposed to be—inside Mom.” Nadia gives my arm a squeeze. “Please don't stress. I have Wraith on standby.”
Fuck me.
I barely have time to process her calling the other two babies “the rest” before my mind catches up.
If she has Wraith nearby… Goddamn. Does she think she’s going to need him to keep Ember’s soul attached to her body?
We are done after this.
No more kids for us.
This shit is insanely stressful.
“No more of that negative line of thinking.” Lorcan gives me a shove right in the pec.
Nadia nods. “I’m actually more concerned for the babies than I am for Ember, at least physically. Like I said, Wraith is around, but I’m staying positive, and you should too.”
I shudder out a heavy breath as my eyes ache. Holy fucking shit. I’ve never experienced this overwhelming feeling of helplessness, and I hate it.
“Nadia,” Emerson calls out. She does her best to keep her tone level, but she’s clearly just as worried as the rest of us.
Ember catches my eyes, and she doesn’t even raise her voice when she says, “Get your asses in here and hold my damn hands.”
Lorcan gives me a shove, but I would have gone to her, anyway. Neither my dragon nor I could deny her anything.
Except more kids.
If she’s dead set on extras after this pregnancy… She’ll have to sweet talk one of the others. I cannot go through this again.

Several hours of pushing later, Ember delivers our egg. It’s stretchy and soft—completely unlike a chicken egg—but Nadia tells us that it’s normal.
“…the egg will harden over the next few days. Can you imagine trying to deliver a hard shell?” Nadia chuckles as her hands swirl with her shadows. She slowly moves them over Ember’s stomach. “Everything feels good to me. Your contractions have stopped. We could try to get you in at the clinic in Haven. They have an ultrasound machine—”
“No,” Ember says firmly. “My wolf is content. She doesn’t want to leave the nest.”
“I agree. It’s best to keep your wolf calm. If there was a problem, I would insist on you going in, but everything seems to be going really well.” Nadia smiles, pulling her hands away and shaking out her shadows.
Emerson leaves to call Ember’s family, and Nadia gives us a bunch of information before heading out.
Ember cradles the egg to her bare chest, smiling down at it, despite how exhausted she looks. “Shit, it’s probably time you call your mom. She’s incubated eggs twice. Also, this is her first grandbaby.”
“It’s still an egg.” Lorcan chuckles. “But, yes, I agree. Call Grandma, so she can put our mate’s mind at ease.”
“Are you sure you’re up for company?” I ask.
Ember nods. “Moms don’t count as company, and I really do have a bunch of questions for her.”
I tug my phone out, calling Athos. He answers on the first ring, and I chuckle. “Can you siphon Mom over?”
“We’re already dressed,” he says in his thick accent. “See you in approximately two minutes.”
I snort and hang up. “All right, we might need to readjust the sheet. They should be here—”
Athos and my mom appear in a shimmery bluish-silver cloud of smoke right as Lorcan tucks the sheet around the top of Ember’s chest.
Athos waves. “I’m not going to stick around this time, but congratulations.” He turns to smoke and promptly disappears.
My mom’s hand flies to her mouth as she blinks, like she’s about to burst into tears. Compared to a human, she looks nowhere close to old enough to have a grandchild.
Ember waves. “Come on over. We have so many questions.”
And with that, my mom promptly bursts into tears.

It’s wild to now have an egg to keep safe and warm. All while Ember grows larger with each passing day.
Lorcan currently has the egg strapped to his chest. Ever since the little guy developed his dragonfire, it’s been necessary for us to take turns.
Anders and Ember help sometimes, but if it starts to heat up, they have to pass him off.
Ember was kinda losing her mind, wanting to know the gender, and Lorcan finally broke down and explained that his magic could tell.
“So, names,” my mate says, resting her head on my chest as she flips through the notebook lined with possible names. “We can ignore these pages. Do we want to stick with the letter of your first name, like my dads tried to do?” She snorts. “Well, except for Arsyn and Chaos.”
I shrug. “It’s hard to come up with V names.”
“Mmm, I’ve got a few. Vaughn, Valen, Virgil…” Lorcan offers, teasing his hand over the silver shell. Everyone who has seen it has been amazed by its color. Mine and my sister’s shells were blue and green.
“Valen is nice.” Ember flips the page and scribbles down that option.
“Victor, Von, Valor. Okay, V is kinda hard,” Anders says.
“Vaughn or Valen. Valor is good too.” I shrug.
Ember tilts her head, grinning up at me. “Maybe we should wait to see him to decide.”
I know she’ll never hold out until that long, but I smirk and bring my hand to her cheek. “That works for me.”
My mouth meets hers for a slow, sensual kiss, and my heart races, just like it always does when we touch.

average human When Ember’s contractions start again, we’re all much more relaxed. Our sweet alpha gets herself settled in the nest and labors for hours, with Sofia monitoring her progress. Once the contractions get close enough together, we call Nadia.
Sofia heads home to her family as soon as the witch arrives. The babies are right on time for a healthy delivery, and that seems to make all the difference.
It’s still difficult to see Ember in pain and to feel it radiate through the bond, but at least there’s no panicking, like we experienced when she birthed the egg.
I’m proud to see the dragon alpha sitting at her side, holding her hand as she pushes. He was a wreck last time, but this time, he’s found his strength. Anders, as always, is attuned to every nuance of Ember’s face.
I chuckle as he offers her an ice chip right as she opens her mouth to ask for one. Oh yeah, he’s completely honed in on her every feeling in the bond.
I’ve lived many lifetimes, but this is one of those days I’ll never forget.

Leander comes first, my handsome little future druid. With his big gray eyes and head of blond hair, it’s easy enough to put the pieces together.
Nadia perhaps ruins the surprise by wrapping him up and handing him to me, but as I hold him, my magic buzzes, calling to his. I would have figured it out the moment his tiny eyes dilate like he’s trying to memorize me.
Hmm, I wonder if vampires have to worry about their children trying to mindfuck them? It would be convenient if they could telepathically communicate what they need before they even learn how to speak.
I’m so enamored by studying Leander’s tiny face that I nearly miss Archer coming into the world.
Anders gives Ember a final kiss and moves to collect our youngest son.
I’m also in the dark about how we’ll calculate age for the egg. He has a tentative name of Vaughn, but Ember declared she would need to see him to know if it fits.
Will Vaughn’s birthday be the day Ember birthed the egg or the day he hatches? I suppose we’ll discuss it when the time comes, but that could very well change their birthing order. Not that it matters a bit, but it is good information to have.
Anders brings Archer over to show him off. It’s clear he takes after Anders, with the blondish-brown hair, but it’s the fuzzy ears and tail that make me chuckle.
Life certainly is going to be busy for us in the coming years.
Veryn still has Vaughn’s egg strapped to his chest in his carrier, but we expect his arrival any day.
The dragon alpha leans over, wrapping his arm around Ember. “You’re incredible,” he murmurs, giving her a squeeze.
“We’re not done just yet,” Ember says, biting her lip.
“The placentas?” I ask, remembering all the videos I watched about what to expect during the delivery.
Nadia’s shoulders shake, but she’s facing Ember, and it takes me several seconds to realize she’s laughing.

Apparently, all it takes to turn three grown men into crybabies is one daughter.
Although, once Ember is all healed, I plan to spank her backside for keeping such a monumental secret from the three of us. More than anything, I’m a little impressed she was able to block her thoughts from spilling over to us in the bond.
Ember rocks Abigail against her chest, and it’s a bit difficult to see the details with all the blubbering I’m doing.
“We really did get one of each species,” Ember whispers, running her finger over Abby’s cheek. “We just didn’t account for the fact Anders has two beast forms.”
“Do you think that’s what caused it?” Veryn asks, grimacing. “That sounded insensitive. I was just saying, my thought process was that maybe she’s the next generation of alpha-omega hybrid.”
Anders nods. “That could be it. One to take after each one of us.”
“Either way, it’s extremely lucky we have two sets of grandparents at the ready,” I say with a grin. “We’re going to need all the help we can get.”
Veryn chuckles, running his hand over Abby’s back. “Now all we need is for Vaughn to finally join the party.”

Less than four hours later, Vaughn hatches. He’s the most beautiful dragon I've ever seen. His scales are silver, and he has black and silver wings and big silver eyes. He truly is breathtaking.
The little shit also hatched knowing how to fly, which Veryn tells us isn’t unusual. I, however, nearly have a bloody heart attack…until I remember I have magic.
Good God.
Why does no one warn you that parenting is fucking terrifying?
Veryn follows him across the living room, but Vaughn lands on the edge of the couch.
“You're going to give us a run for our money. Aren't you, son?” I chuckle as he does a bizarre running hop up my arm and nuzzles his face to Abigail’s as she slumbers against my chest. “Aww, he missed his sister.”
Ember grunts, pulling Archer off her breast and bringing him up to burp him. She looks utterly knackered, but her contentment fills the bond. She glances up at me and grins. “We should probably start considering formula. I’m beat, and my tits hate me.”
I snort. “We’ll make some bottles and keep them on standby.”
Anders nods, wrapping his free arm around our mate. “And as soon as Leander eats, you can get a few hours of rest.”
“Shifts,” I say, chuckling. “Two on, two off. I feel like that’s the only way we’ll survive the next several weeks.”
“Nah.” Veryn scoops up Vaughn. The baby dragonling squawks his displeasure, flapping his wings like he was about to try his luck flying again. “All we have to do is say the word, and we’ll be overrun by family.”
Ember laughs. “Ohmigod. I cannot wait to see my little brothers try to change a crappy diaper.”
Veryn chuckles, heading over and taking the seat on Ember’s free side. “Love you, baby.”
Her head rolls around the back of the couch as she turns to face him. “Love you too.”
She may say the words to him, but she sends her feelings through the bond to me and Anders.
We certainly have an adventure ahead with four little ones, but I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
